Perfumery Code of Ethics

The Perfumery Code of Ethics has been established by Christophe Laudamiel a Master Perfumer and founder of DreamAir creative studios in New York City. He is a founder and president of the non-profit Academy of Perfumery and Aromatics.

Laudamiel is well regarded in the world of fragrance, having carved out a career where he has not only worked on some well known brands (Estee Lauder's Tommy Hilfiger Cool Spray for Woman in 2001 and co-creating Polo Blue for men, Ralph Lauren with Carlos Benaim) but has in most recent years pushed the boundaries between nature and technology in the search for new and unknown scents that are undetectable to the human nose.

Passionate about fragrance and the people responible for the fragrances they create, Laudamiel is doing everything in his power to safeguard the industy from mistrust, plagiarism and fair trade for all involved, from the growers to the perfume creators.

We met Christophe through the power of instagram. In fact he followed us and that lead to us talking. I was intrigued by his code of ethics and after learning more, I boldly asked if we could join. Transparency and honesty is important to us as fragrance designers and makers. We want to work with Christophe, to ensure that brands that mislead the consumer understand the damage they are doing not only to the industry, but to their customers too.

PERFUMERY CODE OF ETHICS

v.21-2022/01

I Originality

We pledge to create or promote original olfactory forms. Creations borrowed from existing olfactory forms must be acknowledged. Original creators and formula owners shall be named and rewarded. Plagiarism is not tolerated.

II Art and Design

We believe that olfactory forms are works of the mind and fragrances are pieces of art and design. Their composers are artists and designers.

III Respect

We strive to ensure that suppliers, farmers and chemists all around the world receive the respect they deserve.

IV Anti-fog

We pledge to write scent descriptions that are reliable and actually descriptive. If we say it, you will smell it.

V Sampling

This Code of Ethics is currently based on an honor system. There is no commitment beside what is expressed above. Perfumers commit personally, formula owners and brands also commit as such.

If complimentary samples are provided, they are not to be resold. They may be donated to e.g. Dress for Success, a school for the blind, or other charities which will donate them to people who cannot afford perfumes or wish to learn perfumes.

VI Disclosure

If we review a fragrance, active contribution or promotion from the fragrance composer or owner will be disclosed.

VII Flagging

If you see or smell something, you are welcome to bring it to our attention. We will be scrupulous about facts and oversights.

VIII Clean Slate

All fragrances created before signing the pledge are grandfathered.
